Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of decorative art: beads of obsidian and shell are among the objects most commonly found in excavations at prehistorie villages in Western Asia, and the intrinsic beauty of gold and coloured stones attracted craftsmen in Sumeria and ancient Egypt some 5000 years ago. This panoramic illustrated history reveals the varied styles, techniques and materials that have delighted men and women through the ages and all over the world. Egyptian necklaces, Celtic tores, Chinese jade amulets, African armlets, Renaissance pendants and Art Nouveau buckles are among the range of masterpieces described by a team of experts from the British Museum and illustrated with 400 megnificent photographs.
