A wonderful compendium of male imagery, as depicted in ancient Rome through contemporary times. This gallery in print includes paintings, statues, photographs, pottery, film clips, drawings and more by Edward Lucie-Smith, David Hockney, Aubrey Beardsley, William Blake, Raphael, Picasso, Henry Fuseli, Michelangelo and many others.
The images follow the text which traces how the male has been perceived and depicted over the centuries: heroic, repressed, aggressive, feminized, villainized and victimized. An excellent and enjoyable survey of cultural influences on the male role including some famous icons (David, Arnold Schwarzenegger), indigenous tribal ornamentation and dress and sexual roles. Over 150 generously sized illustrations, some two-page. A great reference for artists at a very appealing price.
