Count Gyula Batthyány jellemzők

The second volume of the series of albums published by Népszabadság publishing House traces the history of Count Gyula Batthyány's art. Gyula Batthyány, the great-grandson of the prime minister of the first independent Hungarian government, Lajos Batthyány, was a peculiar figure in the history of Hungarian painting. In his pictures the secretive, desired world of the Hungarian aristocracy is revived: the illustrious events in Budapest, Munich and Paris, the horse-races, balls and teh sensuous, sultry world of the night clubs. His pictures show the influence of the Ballets Russes, of Nijinsky, and of Bakst's art, just as much as that of the exotic journeys, the adventurous experiences in the East.
In Péter Molno's book, life and art, individual fate and the dramatic events of twentieth- century Hungarian history are represented in a close relationship. More than 150 colour reproductions and several authentic contemporary documents help to trace the steps of this unusual artist, which led from richness and success, from the world of the aristocracy to the prison of the communist regime and to dim oblivion.
