Joseph Byron got his commercial photography business off the ground around 1890 by specializing in stage photography - a bold, entrepreneurial move. (At the time, stage promotional images were drawn by artists, but producers soon began to recognize the publicity value of Bíron's pictures.) While the Byron Company went on to document all aspects of New York culture for more than forty years, the theater photographs remain among its most intriguing, as they both transport us to bygone days and spark our ageless passion for the drama of the stage.
