Sacred Stones

Mystery and beauty emanate from the standing stones, stone circles, and stone chambers that grace the countryside of the British Isles. Constructed three to six thousand years ago, they functioned primarily as places for ritual and ceremony. Many were constructed with entrances or significant stones positioned to mark important astronomical events, such as the rising and setting of the sun, equinoxes, and major movements of the moon. Others served less lofty purposes, perhaps, as simple route markers. But today they hold the secrets of ages long past and invoke our collective ancestral longings. The photographs in this book of postcards deliver the essence of the quiet but overwhelming power of these sacred stones.
