Korea is a mountainous peninsula surrounded by sea on three sides. It shares its northern borders with China and Russia. Its closest neighbor to the south is Japan, which lies across a narrow strait. The people of Korea speak a common language and regard themselves as homogeneous. They have been self-governing since ancient times and have created their own unique and vital artistic trraditions. The thirty works of art reproduced in this book of postcards attest to the richness and variety of those traditions. Beautifully painted folding screens, Buddhas and Buddhist figures on hanging scrolls or rendered in bronze, superb celadon ceramics an blue-and-white porcelains rivaling those produced anywhere else in Asia, and vibrantly colored patchwork and embroidered textiles are among the examples of Korean artistry showcased here. All are from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art.
