Them and Us jellemzők

The change in government has ushered in a new political language. After the individualism of Thatcher's Tories and the pragmatism of New Labour, now the Coalition is focusing on fairness. But what does fairness really mean? How can it be achieved? And is this government taking the right approach?
The depth of the recession and the prospect of years of austerity have raised questions about the workability of capitalism not seen since the depths of the post-Depression 1930s. one of the constraints on recovery is the growing belief that if the old model did not work there is no substantial new one on offer. In Them and Us, Will Hutton sets out to provide one, arguing that reconstructing a bust financial system is not just a technical question. It cannot be done without a wholescale revision of the wider values on which it is based. Unfairness is economically inefficient and socially toxic, stifling plurality, innovation and progress - we urgently need to recognise that in the new capitalism the pursuit of profit must be accompanied by good conscience and sense of purpose in order o avoid repeating our recent mistakes.
